According to CBS NEWS, the United States Government reported that in December 2023, nearly 300,000 migrants from all over the world entered through the border with Mexico. This is a record number that surpasses the number of migrants who entered in September 2023. This further exacerbates the migrant crisis, which has been ongoing for three years, impacting issues such as the scarcity of migration-related resources, important political junctures directly affecting President Biden, and the initiation of legislative debates considering asylum limitations.
Additionally, these high numbers have put border agents in a tight spot, as they are struggling to process this large influx of migrants. In an interview with The New York Times, Scott Carmon, a Border Patrol guard commander, expressed, «We are not equipped to handle this,» he said, while surveying the camp. «It’s a humanitarian disaster.» This serves as a snapshot of the current reality at the border.
Furthermore, the crisis also falls on Mexico, as the country must deal with the responsibility of preventing the massive crossing of migrants into the United States. The New York Times recently mentioned that «U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and other senior officials traveled to Mexico on Wednesday to discuss the surge in migration with President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.»
Official figures for January 2024 are not yet known, but border agents will likely continue to receive a high flow of migrant cases in the coming weeks.
